After the baby arrives, everything changes in a blink. Your focus naturally shifts to your newborn—but I want to gently remind you that your healing and care matter just as much.
As a doula who’s been walking with new moms and birthing people for over five years, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it is when someone makes space for themselves in the 4th trimester. It's not about being perfect or getting everything right—it's about honoring the huge shift your body, heart, and mind are going through.
The 4th Trimester Is Still Part of the Birth Journey
Most people talk about birth as the finish line, but truly, it's just the beginning of a new chapter. The first 12 weeks after giving birth are filled with so many changes—your hormones are shifting, your body is healing, and you’re adjusting to caring for a whole new person.
I always tell my clients: You just did something incredible. Let’s treat your recovery with the same care we gave your birth plan.
That means:
Resting without guilt
Eating warm, nourishing meals
Drinking plenty of fluids
Asking for help (and receiving it without apology)
Listening to your body’s cues—emotionally and physically
You don't have to "bounce back." You don’t need to host visitors or have a spotless home. What you do need is support, hydration, and compassion—especially for yourself.
Nourishment Is Self-Care
One of the most common questions I get from breastfeeding parents is how to keep their milk supply flowing naturally. My answer always starts with hydration.
This simple smoothie recipe is one I often recommend because it's not only nourishing, but it’s made with ingredients that naturally support lactation. It’s also quick to make—which I know is essential during those early weeks.
Lactation Booster Smoothie (Doula-Tested & Mom-Approved)
Ingredients:
1 cup oat milk (or almond milk)
1 frozen banana
2 tbsp rolled oats
1 tbsp ground flaxseed
1 tbsp almond butter
½ tsp cinnamon
1–2 pitted dates (optional, for natural sweetness)
Ice (optional)
Directions: Toss everything into the blender and blend until smooth. Sip it slowly—ideally while you’ve got your feet up and baby is snoozing nearby.
Oats and flaxseed are both known to support milk production, and this combo gives you a solid dose of healthy fats, fiber, and energy-boosting carbs. It’s great for those foggy mornings or mid-afternoon slumps when you need a little nourishment without much effort.
Taking care of yourself isn't extra—it's essential. You deserve to be cared for with the same love and attention you’re giving your baby. If you’re in the 4th trimester and feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone. I see you, I honor your journey, and I'm here when you need support.
